Frank Noppenberger Steve Timko, executive director for the NJSIAA, the statewide organization that oversees and administers New Jersey high school athletics, was approached the other day to comment about an individual from East Brunswick. “Frank Noppenberger, right?” Timko answered. “I know he announced his retirement [effective July 31]. It would be my privilege to tell you what I think about him. Before reading about what Timko and a few of the literally thousands of admirers had to say about what Noppenberger has meant to East Brunswick athletics, understand this. Mention East Brunswick High School, and the first person anyone thinks of is “Nop,” as he is affectionately called. That’s how synonymous he is and always will be with the Bears. “He is one of the best athletic directors I have had the opportunity to work with,” Timko said. “Frank has always represented integrity and honesty, and has impressed me with how organized he is. He’s an outstanding administrator. More than that, he’s a good friend. Timko’s remarks, as if they need validation, are confirmed by enough honors Noppenberger has received throughout his career that they should almost qualify him for sainthood. They include the 2011 State Award of Merit by the Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey Inc., which is emblematic of being the top athletic director in the state. Other awards include being named Greater Middlesex Conference (GMC) AD of the Year in 1994-95 and 2004-05, and the Bill Denny National Football Foundation Distinguished American Award in 2008. Probably one of his last official statewide responsibilities will be as director of the NJSIAA Boys Volleyball Tournament, which concludes with the state finals at South Brunswick High School the first week of June. It is a tournament Noppenberger has overseen since 2000. Noppenberger is not a native of East Brunswick. He’s a 1972 graduate of neighborhood rival South River High School. But rarely has a day gone by when he hasn’t donned some article of green clothing with a Bear woven on it. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from West Chester State College in Pennsylvania in 1976, where he also played football, Noppenberger became an assistant football coach for Christ the King High School and an assistant basketball coach for Paul VI High School. He also taught elementary school at Christ the King and St. Philip the Apostle School that year. A year later, East Brunswick came calling, and Noppenberger answered by joining the district. He taught physical education and began a coaching and athletic administration career that will end up lasting 37 years. During the early years of that career, Noppenberger somehow managed to earn a Master of Science degree from Trenton State College, now The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), in 1981. Of the many highlights during his coaching tenure, he mentored the 1986-87 boys basketball team to the school’s first Central Jersey Group IV sectional tournament crown. When Noppenberger turned from coaching to being the athletic director in 1988, Robert “Bo” Henning succeeded him as boys basketball coach. Henning also established a legacy that will endure, and he stepped down last year after 25 years on the sidelines. “I have watched Frank through the years handle the job with the kind of care that’s necessary to make the impact he has,” Henning said. “With every decision, Nop took the time to measure how it would affect the student-athletes, the school and the conference. That’s always been his top priority when making some unbelievably tough decisions through the years. In Henning’s mind, one of the most valuable and lasting contributions the former GMC basketball tournament co-chairman and then chairman (1991-2011) made was resisting a number of attempts to move the GMC boys and girls finals from the Louis Brown Athletic Center (RAC) at Rutgers University to a different venue. “There were many times people wanted the finals out of there [because of the expense that cut into the revenue the event generated]. Nop said, ‘Bull.’ We don’t need to make more money and sacrifice for what is the best tournament in the state, which it is. In late February, a crowd at the RAC of over 5,000 saw the Piscataway Township High School girls defeat Bishop George Ahr High School and the St. Joseph High School of Metuchen boys beat the Bears, an outcome that undoubtedly put Noppenberger in a sour mood, but only for a few days. With the announcement of his retirement, the accolades keep pouring in from colleagues, former players and administrators across the state and beyond New Jer- sey’s borders, but Noppenberger has never sought out this recognition. Perhaps his most impactful contributions have come as a result of tireless work that has gone mostly under the radar. Henning said the moment that stands out the most in his mind was a letter the Henning family received that stated his son, Bobby, a former East Brunswick and TCNJ player who is now an assistant coach at South Brunswick High School, was nominated as a McDonald’s All-American. “That’s quite an honor in itself,” Henning said, “And whether Bobby deserved it, I’ll let others decide. But we found out a few days later, it was Frank who submitted the nomination. In his written resume, Noppenberger still refers to his wife of 34 years, Nancy, as his bride. The couple has three daughters, all East Brunswick graduates — Lise, Caroline and Christine. Noppenberger said he has not decided what his plans are once he officially steps down on July 31.
