In “Divergent,” a young woman (Shailene Woodley) finds herself at odds with her dystopian society, and discovers that she doesn’t fit in with her chosen group. The movie, based on a popular Young Adult novel, also stars Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney and Tony Goldwyn. Josh Phillips: This movie, much like it’s YA-adapted predecessors, is solely created to appeal to a specific age bracket. With themes like not fitting in, the major suck-i-tude of cliques and young love, the teen market is the perfect place to aim this cannon. And, at least to this curmudgeonly reviewer, it’s an overblown, overly-dramatic, drawn-out affair. Rather like my own teenage years. Brandon Cone: I enjoyed this movie much more than Josh. I actually found myself quite invested in the characters, and the lives they were forced into. While I will agree that this is not high cinema, it’s not a bad way to spend an evening. JP: The story is very interesting, though it’s really just a magnified look at the odd societies we all experienced in junior high and high school. Much like the first day of high school, our heroine has to make a choice about which group she wants to join. Then it’s all about a power-play for placement, or ranking, among the established members of the clique. Then, that clique has to vie for dominance against the other cliques. Methinks the author had a lousy experience in her own high school, and this was her coping mechanism. BC: I hadn’t made that connection until Josh shared it with me, and that made me enjoy the movie even more. It’s actually quite clever despite what Mr. Phillips would have you believe. JP: I didn’t dislike the movie, just some parts of it (like the length and the lead actress). I do think the story could have been better executed, with a lot less anguish and self-doubt. I know I’m not a teenager, and thus not the demographic, but I was a teen once, and I recall some joy and positive things happening. This story would have you believe that all is lost, the sky is falling and that the apocalypse is unavoidable. BC: Have you never met a teenager? That’s pretty much how they react to any kind of adversity. JP: I’ve made my feelings about Shailene Woodley clear, but I have to tell you what prompts this disdain. She’s a fine young woman by all accounts, giving to charity and helping the environment, but she’s a stiff (that’s not a reference to the character’s origins!) actress. She tries to show emotion but somehow gets stuck on the-verge-of-tears or outright befuddlement. She does have pretty hair, though. BC: She not that bad. I actually thought that she and co-star Theo James’ performances were two of the highpoints of the movie. They do excellent jobs. JP: James, the British actor playing Trice’s trainer/boyfriend, Four, gives an admirable turn as the Dauntless warrior. While a little stunted on emotion (I suppose that’s OK, given his character’s origin), he’s appropriately broody and gruff. BC: The only other thing I’ve seen James in is an episode of “Downton Abbey.” He gets more to do here and is actually quite impressive. He may be a leading man in the making. JP: Kate Winslet plays a fairly small but pivotal role, and though she’s not given a lot to do, this is the first time I can recall that she’s played a villain. It was nice to see. BC: She relishes in the role, playing the kind of character who is interesting because if the story was written just a little differently, she’d be the hero. JP: As this was a young adult story, there’s a pre-requisite pack of supporting characters to prop up Trice and Four. Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller and a couple other unknown actors broaden the range of Trice’s wealth of emotion. BC: Teller is another up-and-comer who I enjoyed seeing again. While he’s usually cast for his comedic abilities, he did an excellent job as a jerk here. JP: Along with Winslet, we get another not-OK baddie in Jai Courtney. He’s a whole bag of tools, but he’s perfectly intimidating and menacing. Pretty tough to pull off when you have a weird forehead piercing and volume knobs in your earlobes. BC: Courtney is a fine actor, who stood out to me for his role in “Spartacus” a few years back. Since then, his stock has only risen and more roles are coming to him. JP: I am always amazed when an existing, well-known city is recreated in CGI (that’s Computer Generated Imagery if you’ve been selflessly serving others to the detriment of your awareness of current events). Chicago is given a post-apocalyptic makeover, with blasted buildings, arid rivers and other touchstones of a post-war, dystopian world. And it looks convincing, so bonus there. BC: It is quite an impressive site. The post-war Chicago looks and feels very real. JP: The world of the factions is nicely rendered, relying on colors, outfits and even personality traits. Each faction, a take on a clique we’re all more than familiar with, is distinct despite being only broadly explained. BC: I would hate having to wear the same color everyday. That would get old pretty dang quick. JP: Despite my surly tone, I didn’t hate this movie. I do think it was too long and overwrought, but what was I expecting from a teen romance/war-flick? It was better than “Twilight” (not that hard a feat!) but it paled in comparison to the other dystopian movie franchise, “The Hunger Games.” And for all I know, maybe the next six installments will be better. BC: Eureka! Hope springs eternal — even for Mr. “Divergent” is rated PG-13 for intense violence and action, thematic elements and some sensuality. You must choose!
